Teaching Statement
"I believe in using games and simulations to reinforce subjects and to help bridge the gap that can exist between academic theory and practical application. I employ active learning, through application of what is read and discussed, to realistic assignments that challenge students to creatively solve problems. I use a variety of teaching approaches to stimulate different learning styles and also vary assessment methods to ensure all students have an opportunity to present themselves using their own unique talents and abilities. Extra-credit research is encouraged, through optional activities such as a film series or reading."
Having served as the lead instructor for over thirty courses at four different colleges and universities, Dr. Englund has led classes as large as 180 and as small as five, has supervised as many as five graduate student teaching assistants, and developed distance learning courses. He currently serves as the director of the terrorism concentration at National Intelligence University.
Course topics include:
International relations
US Government and Institutions
Terrorism
US government counter-terrorism policy
US intelligence history and policy
US foreign policy
International Development
